AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and it is a nationally recognized college readiness system. The AVID secondary program is offered at Cabrillo, Lakewood, Millikan, and Wilson High Schools.  Avalon offers both the AVID Elementary and Secondary programs.

AVID Mission

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Overview

Elementary Program offered only at Avalon. AVID Elementary teachers provide all students with opportunities to develop academic habits they will need for success in middle school, high school and college, in an age-appropriate and challenging way.  Children learn organization, study skills, and self-advocacy skills.  A strong college-going culture encourages students to learn about college and careers.

Secondary Program

AVID is an elective class designed to target and enroll students from the academic middle into the school’s most rigorous courses.  Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help students succeed on a path to college and career success.  Students receive support in the AVID elective class through tutoring and a proven curriculum based on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR).  In addition, students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses.
