3510 Green School Operations (2019)

This initial policy outlined broad strategies LBUSD should take to reduce energy, water, and waste consumption, among other environmentally-responsible actions.

This policy solidifies LBUSD's district-wide commitment to equity and ensuring all our students, including BIPOC and students with disabilities, have access to strong and exceptional educational experiences at our schools.  
 

3510.1 Green School Operations - Energy & Sustainability Policy (2022)

This policy builds on 3510 Green School Operations by specifically addressing greenhouse gas reduction strategies and establishing the Climate and Sustainability Taskforce to hold the District accountable for climate progress. 

LBUSD Facility Master Plan (2022)

This Facility Master Plan was the result of a year-long engagement process with multiple LBUSD departments and stakeholders that guides the Facilities and Planning Department's efforts for updating, modernizing, and constructing our schools. Two of the ten key strategies recommended in this Plan are "Sustainability" and "Wellness & Green Spaces," highlighting the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility to the District's schools. 
 

District-wide Sustainability Plan (2024)

LBUSD's Sustainability Plan is based on Green School Operations Policy 3510.1 and focuses on strategies that will lower LBUSD's greenhouse gas emissions. There are Priority strategies and Programmatic strategies outlined in the plan that will directly and indirectly lower the District's emissions while also engaging our students and staff in more sustainable actions in our schools. 

AB32 - California Global Warming Solutions Act

This bill initially set the requirement that the state of California lower its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.  

AB341 - Mandatory Commercial Recycling (2012)

To help meet California's GHG reduction goals, this bill requires commercial properties (including school districts) to divert recyclable materials from the landfill. 
 

AB1826 - Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling (2014)

This bill requires that certain businesses and public entities divert their organic waste from the landfill. Phase 1 began in 2016, with subsequent phases for compliance rolling out over the next few years.
 

SB32 - California Global Warming Solutions Act: Emissions Limit (2016)

This bill updated AB32 by adjusting and specifying the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, newly stating that the state of CA must lower its GHG emissions by 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.  
 

SB1383 - Short-lived Climate Pollutants Reduction Strategy (2016)

To further reduce organic waste from going to landfills, in addition to continued compliance with organics collection, this bill requires entities to donate uneaten edible foods to appropriate food rescue organizations.  

AB/SB130 - Climate Change and Environmental Justice Education (2021)

This bill allocated $6 million of the state's budget to create free educational resources for teachers to use to teach climate change and environmental justice. The curricular project was run by Ten Strands and the San Mateo County Office of Education, and resulted in the Seeds to Solutions resources.  
 

AB285 - Climate Change Education Science Requirement (2023)

This bill requires that science curriculum in California K-12 schools addresses the causes and effects of climate change, as well as discusses strategies to mitigate and adapt to its impacts. 
 

AB1572 - Potable Water Reduction through Nonfunctional Turf Replacement (2023)

This bill restricts the use of potable water for irrigating nonfunction turf, such as decorative lawns that serve no recreational purpose.
