Why is Sustainability Important to LBUSD?

Even before we had policies in place that pushed our sustainability efforts to the forefront, our district departments worked towards healthier, more environmentally responsible buildings, grounds, and classrooms. Students also began to get involved, and worked diligently to encourage the district to publicly announce their commitment to sustainability. Over the past few years, LBUSD's Board of Education has approved policies and plans that integrate environmental accountability into District programs and operations.

Policy approvals and master planning efforts culminated in the District-Wide Sustainability Plan, published in 2024, which documents our commitment to pushing the envelope about what large, urban school districts can accomplish together.

Check out the tabs below for more information on the District policies and plans as well as state-wide legislation that have influenced our sustainability progress over time.
