Updated Policy Effective January 2026

Starting January 2026, the Office of Research and Student Outcomes will significantly reduce the number of new research applications. This change is necessary to manage resources effectively during a period of limited staffing and budget constraints.

Applications may be considered under the following circumstances:

  • Current LBUSD employees enrolled in the LBUSD/San Diego State Doctoral Program or completing graduate research for a master’s or doctoral degree.
  • Program researchers with an existing district partnership who are collecting data or conducting research aligned with the District's Strategic Plan.

What is considered "research" in LBUSD?

Research in education refers to any methodological or systematic process to increase the body of knowledge to inform practices and policies. It encompasses all investigation, measurement, and evaluation activities, including design, pilots, data collection and analysis, interpretation of results, and conclusions and recommendations. Research may include primary data collection, secondary data usage, or both.
