About Us
The Nutrition Services Branch (NSB) operates three Child Nutrition Programs: School Nutrition Programs, Child and Adult Care Food Program, and Summer Food Service Program year round with a $38 million operating budget. Each school day, the NSB serves more than 50,000 meals during and after school. With the federal and state reimbursements from the three Child Nutrition Programs, the NSB is self-sufficient without the financial support from the District’s general fund.
In addition to the Child Nutrition Programs, the NSB participates in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program at selected elementary schools to introduce students to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have the opportunity to sample. The NSB is also a proud recipient of California Farm to School Incubator grants, which connect students to the sources of their food through education, taste tests, school gardens, and local food sourcing for school meals. In collaboration with the City of Long Beach, the NSB supports the summer lunch at parks for the City of Long Beach, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Marine.
The NSB has a team of Registered Dietitians who plan the menus according to the nutrient standards and meal service requirements set forth by the USDA and state regulatory agencies. The Nutrition Center houses a state-of-the art cook-chill facility that produces quality scratch cooked items that are finished in the school kitchens as well as fresh entrée salads and sandwiches that are featured in the middle and high school cafeterias. The NSB purchases and houses all food and non-food items centrally in the Nutrition Center. Fresh and perishable items are delivered daily to school kitchens in refrigerated trucks while school kitchens receive dry and paper goods on a weekly basis.
We strive to provide wholesome and nutritious meals to promote healthy food choices in support of student learning and growth. Our team of food and nutrition professionals welcome suggestions and comments to improve our services to students continuously. Please contact us for any feedback or suggestions. Thank you.
