Meet Five Class of 2025 Grads
Stories of Purpose, Leadership, and Resilience Across Long Beach Unified
The Class of 2025 is leaving its mark. Across Long Beach Unified, students are graduating with confidence, compassion, and a clear sense of purpose, hallmarks of our Graduate Portrait. This year’s graduates are artists and athletes, coders and communicators, scholars and advocates with a story that reflects resilience, growth, and the promise of a bright future.
Meet five students whose journeys capture the heart of LBUSD: bold, brilliant, and ready for what’s next.
Jillene Wetteland
Jillene Wetteland, a senior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, exemplifies every dimension of LBUSD’s Graduate Portrait. From intellectual curiosity and resilience to integrity and collaborative leadership, Jillene embodies a well-rounded student prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
As one of California’s top high jumpers and a standout on Poly’s state-ranked relay teams, she has earned a coveted spot at Harvard University, where she will continue her academic and athletic journey on one of the nation’s most prestigious stages.
As a student in Poly’s nationally recognized PACE program, Jillene embraced a rigorous curriculum filled with Advanced Placement and honors courses, while simultaneously excelling in athletics and the arts. She brought discipline and creativity to her performances as a cellist in the school’s Chamber and Symphony orchestras, displaying time management and critical thinking as she balanced these responsibilities with elite athletic training. Her ability to navigate complexity, seek meaningful challenges, and uplift her team reflects the Graduate Portrait’s call for students to be critical thinkers, effective communicators, and connected global citizens.
Jillene’s decision to commit to Harvard speaks not only to her talent but also to the strength of character and sense of purpose she has cultivated throughout her LBUSD experience. With her final season ahead, she remains focused on helping her team succeed while inspiring younger students to dream bigger. Her journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we nurture the whole child, mind, body, and spirit—and prepare them not just for graduation, but for life. Congratulations, Jillene!
Yamilet Gonzalez
From quiet observer to powerful advocate, Yamilet Gonzalez is the embodiment of our Graduate Portrait. A proud Jordan High School senior, Yamilet sits on the Principal’s Advisory Board and will attend Cal Poly Pomona this fall to study software engineering. But her journey has been anything but ordinary. Yamilet began her high school experience as a reserved freshman, unsure of how or when to use her voice.
That all changed when she joined Jordan’s Pathway Ambassador class and Superintendent Dr. Baker’s RSVP (Raising Student Voices and Participation) initiative. In those spaces, Yamilet found her footing and her voice. Surrounded by peers who inspired her and mentors who believed in her, she blossomed into a confident, eloquent leader. Today, she uses her voice to advocate for others, to inspire change, and to uplift her school community with both grace and determination.
As the oldest of four siblings and a first-generation college student, Yamilet is blazing a path for herself and her entire family. Her story is one of transformation, courage, and leadership, and we have no doubt this is only the beginning. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is lucky to have her, and we can’t wait to watch her star continue to rise.
Nathan Phan
Nathan Phan is the kind of Lakewood High student who leaves a lasting impact, not just because of his academic excellence, but also because of his exceptional character. With unmatched energy, dedication, and leadership, he elevates everything he touches. As one of the Class of 2025 valedictorians, he embodies discipline and determination, yet his leadership style uplifts those around him. A perfect example is that he inspired his younger sister to join ROTC, a clear sign that his influence extends well beyond the classroom.
In addition to his stellar grades, Nathan has been deeply involved in NJROTC, Badminton, and Play Production at Lakewood, balancing a diverse set of commitments with remarkable focus. His passion for service is evident in his involvement with ROTC, reflecting his strong sense of duty and responsibility. This dedication no doubt contributed to his acceptance to UC Irvine, where he will study Computer Science. He remains hopeful about the possibility of fulfilling his dream of attending the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy.
But here’s what might surprise people about Nathan: despite his rigorous schedule, he brings a creative spark to Play Production, showing that his talents extend beyond leadership and academics. He thrives in environments that challenge him—whether it’s the strategy of badminton, the discipline of ROTC, or the artistry of theater. This rare ability to excel across such distinct fields highlights his adaptability, creativity, and inner drive.
Nathan’s story is one of perseverance, ambition, and heart, qualities that will undoubtedly propel him forward in his future endeavors. Wherever he lands, one thing is sure: Nathan will continue to lead, serve, and inspire those around him.
Christian Hoke
Every school wants to have a student like Christian Hoke—humble, hardworking, and deeply committed to both his personal growth and the well-being of others. He’s dependable, reflective, and approaches challenges with quiet determination. What truly sets him apart is his desire to give back. He’s not just focused on his success, but on lifting those around him—peers, staff, and anyone in need.
His classmates admire him for his insight and thoughtfulness. Christian listens closely, speaks with care, and brings a calm, steady presence wherever he goes. His ability to reflect and communicate with compassion has made him a trusted voice on campus.
Even with the heavy academic load that comes with attending a STEM-focused school like CAMS, Christian has made time to be an active and generous leader. He served as President of CAMS’ Black Student Alliance, represented the Black Literary Society as an Ambassador, led as a CAMS Link Crew Leader, and played on the Boys Varsity Volleyball team. He has always leaned into opportunities that build community, foster connections, and encourage collaboration.
This fall, Christian will be heading to Tufts University, having also earned admission to Howard.
Christian will be the first to tell you his journey hasn’t been without hurdles. He faced moments that tested his focus and motivation, but through it all, he’s remained steady, reflective, and committed to his goal. His quiet strength and ability to push forward, even during challenging times, speak volumes about his character, a significant part of what makes him so special!
Brandon Oceguera Munguia
Brandon Oceguera Munguia, a proud graduate of Avalon School’s Class of 2025, exemplifies what it means to be a student leader with purpose. A young man of great character and compassion, Brandon has spent years giving back to his community, never seeking praise and always ready to serve. Whether leading campus efforts as President of the Interact Club or rolling up his sleeves for a beach cleanup, Brandon’s dedication to improving the lives of others is woven into everything he does.
His journey of service began in middle school when he joined the Interact Club for the first time. Since then, his passion for helping others has only grown stronger. He’s organized and participated in clothing drives, raised funds for shelters, and coordinated meaningful donations, each act of kindness rooted in a genuine belief that communities thrive when people care for one another. Brandon’s a catalyst for change, inspiring those around him to lead with heart.
This fall, Brandon will attend Long Beach City College to study Fire Science, with dreams of becoming a firefighter, a career that beautifully aligns with his lifelong mission to serve. His story is a shining reflection of the Graduate Portrait, which calls for students to be critical thinkers, ethical leaders, and community advocates. We celebrate Brandon for who he is: a young man ready to serve, uplift, and lead.
Congratulations to the entire Class of 2025! Your journey inspires us, your voices strengthen us, and your future is limitless. We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next.
