“Siempre Adelante”: LBUSD School Proudly Displays New Murals Symbolizing Resilience and Community

Formerly known as Chavez Elementary, the school recently partnered with Long Beach Walls to unveil two new murals on campus that inspire students and the community.

Long Beach Walls is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing art and culture to public spaces. Since 2015, the organization has created more than 150 murals throughout Long Beach, making projects like the new murals possible.

Vanessa Mosqueda, an incredible elementary school teacher, applied to Long Beach Walls and shared why it would be a great location for such a meaningful project. The two artists, Elizabeth Munzon and Ms. Yellow, are both Latina and Long Beach natives. Their mural’s message has resonated with students, and partnering with such inspiring role models was especially important for the school community.

One of the murals features monarch butterflies, a representation of immigrants and the transformation students go through as they grow and learn together, while the cactus symbolizes resilience.

Dr. Brenda Ocampo, principal at the school expressed pride in the second mural’s significance: “The ‘Siempre Adelante’ in Ms. Yellow’s mural acts as a reminder to keep moving forward toward your dreams. Both murals share beautiful messages that I hope will inspire our students and community, and bring healing during a difficult time for our school.”
