Sato Senior Alana Arroyo Selected as 2024-25 LBUSD Student Board Member

Student Board Member - Alana Arroyo

The Long Beach Unified School District has proudly selected Alana Arroyo, a Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science senior, to serve as the 2024-25 Student Board Member. Arroyo was officially sworn in by Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker and Board President Diana Craighead during the Board of Education meeting on September 4, 2024.

Alana Arroyo, a first-generation Mexican-American student on the engineering pathway at Sato Academy, plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering with a focus on aerospace. In addition to her academic achievements, Arroyo serves on her school’s student council, is an ambassador, and participates in the Drone Soccer Program, which promotes STEM education by fostering student engagement and personal growth.

“I am honored and grateful for this opportunity,” Arroyo shared. “I look forward to learning from student perspectives and ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in decision-making.”

Arroyo follows in the footsteps of Axel Aguilar, who served as LBUSD’s second Student Board Member during the 2023-24 school year. As the District’s third student representative, she will attend all Board functions and open-session meetings, where she can participate in discussions and ask questions. While Arroyo will have the ability to cast a “preferential vote” on open-session items, this vote serves as a formal expression of her opinion and does not affect the Board’s official vote.

“Alana’s commitment to amplifying student voices is truly inspiring,” Superintendent Dr. Jill A. Baker said. “We are excited to have her represent our students and bring their perspectives to the forefront of our Board discussions.”

Board President Diana Craighead praised Arroyo's preparedness and dedication: “Alana was a standout candidate. She went above and beyond, studying Board meetings and gaining a deep understanding of the role. Her work ethic and passion are commendable.”

LBUSD welcomes applications for the Student Board Member position from any high school student body officer, class officer, or club president leading a club with at least 30 student members. For the 2024-25 school year, the District received over 34 applications for this prestigious role.
