Sankofa Summer Academy Connects Students to History, Identity, and Opportunity

For Christian, a sixth-grade student in Long Beach Unified’s Sankofa Summer Academy, summer learning is about much more than academics.

“I love Sankofa because of being with my friends; I feel happy when I am part of this community,” he said. “It is important for me to be here, so I can bring joy, brilliance, and dignity from the past and present.”

That sense of belonging is at the heart of Sankofa Summer Academy, a program serving rising kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Through engaging learning experiences, students strengthen academic skills while exploring Black history, culture, and the people whose courage and leadership helped shape our nation.

For Julian, another sixth-grade student, the program has introduced him to stories that continue to inspire him.

“I like Sankofa because we learn about our history and ancestors and how they carved a path for us, like James Weldon Johnson, who wrote ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’” he said.

Throughout the summer, students participate in meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity, build confidence, and deepen their understanding of history while creating lasting connections with classmates and educators.

The academy, held at the Center of Black Student Excellence, is currently accepting students and runs from June 22 through July 17. Families are encouraged to contact the program directly for enrollment information. Families looking to continue enriching opportunities beyond the summer can also explore Long Beach Unified’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P), which provides before- and after-school, summer, and intersession programs for eligible students.

The District also invites families to attend the Black Student Achievement Initiative Symposium, “Rooted in Sankofa, Unlocking the Future: Connecting Families to Resources, Relationships and Opportunities,” on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The symposium will connect students and families with educational resources, community partners, and opportunities that support student success.
