The Long Beach Press-Telegram’s 2023 Halloween-themed Scary Stories Contest included these categories and winning Long Beach Unified School District students:
- Elementary School Stories – first place, “The Creepy Pumpkin” by Daniela Rivera of Longfellow; Elementary School Artwork – first place, untitled drawing by Carl Pasinos of Longfellow.
- Middle School Stories – first place, untitled by Deybi Berhanu of Stanford; Middle School Artwork – first place, untitled artwork by Hailey Gremillion of Marshall.
- High School Stories – first place, “I Feel My Skull” by Roberto Ibarra of Poly; High School Artwork – first place, untitled artwork by Alana-Jain Feder of McBride.
A photograph titled, “World Drumming,” by LBUSD Music Education Teacher Valerie Vinnard was accepted into the International Delta Kappa Gamma Society (DKG) Fine Arts Gallery. The self-portrait reflects Vinnard’s important work with students and incorporates a mural on display at McKinley Elementary School which aligns with common drumming traits — building teamwork, positive attitude, cooperation and mutual respect.
