Quimari Shemwell

Long Beach Unified School District proudly celebrates the continued success of Long Beach Polytechnic High School alum Quimari Shemwell, class of 2024, who has been named a Loker Hicks Transfer Scholar-Athlete of the Week at the University of California, Berkeley.

The recognition honors student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional commitment to academic growth, critical thinking, and engagement both in the classroom and in competition. Shemwell, now a member of Cal’s football program, was selected for his dedication to self-improvement, disciplined study habits, and ability to connect his academic work to broader historical and cultural perspectives.

His achievements reflect the strong foundation built at Long Beach Poly and the lasting impact of LBUSD educators who prepare students to excel beyond graduation. At Berkeley, Shemwell continues to embody the scholar-athlete mindset—balancing rigorous academics with Division I athletics while pursuing personal and intellectual growth.

LBUSD congratulates Quimari Shemwell on this outstanding honor and celebrates the role Poly and our district community play in launching students toward success at the nation’s leading universities.

Cabrillo High School teacher Jeff Jacobs, who has directed Cabrillo’s annual Black History Show for more than a decade, was recently featured on KNX News 97.1 FM discussing the school’s Black History Celebration. The event honors Black American achievements and brings the LBUSD community together. Originally started as a show by a former theater teacher, the celebration has grown into an annual tradition that many students and families look forward to each year. This year’s theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” blended modern media and current events to recognize 100 years of Black History Month.
