Long Beach Unified Students Commit to Harvard

Congratulations to Leila Holland and Jillene Wetteland of Long Beach Poly High School, who announced their commitment to Harvard University.

Reputably known as the "Home of Scholars and Champions", Wetteland and Holland exemplify Poly's standards by excelling academically in the classroom and on the track field. The students' remarkable achievements include Holland's state finalist status in the 100-meter dash and 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays and Wetteland's status as the top returning high jumper in California.

Both outstanding seniors are the epitome of the Graduate Portrait and are enrolled in the Long Beach Poly PACE program, a nationally recognized premier college-prep initiative. As LBUSD's first magnet program, PACE is of exceptional merit, requiring enrollment in Advanced Placement and honors classes. Lectures are taught by a collaborative cohort of teachers who offer guidance and support to students at every level, reflecting the Adult Portrait elements, where staff champion students and empower them to take prudent risks and grow.

Holland notes, "throughout my four years here, my coaches have gotten to know me really well. So whenever I'm stressed about something recruiting-wise or life-wise, they've always been there for me; they've been that support system."

"With the training, they've prepared us well for college training," Wetteland added. "I think we'll be ready when we compete collegiately."

Long Beach Unified wishes them luck in their future endeavors!
