Learning Policy Institute Recognizes LBUSD
The Learning Policy Institute (LPI) has recognized Long Beach Unified School District as a model for secondary schools in its efforts to advance relationship-centered schooling.
In its 2024 report, LPI noted that LBUSD demonstrated an effort to advance students’ professional development by focusing on building relationships and empathy in classrooms while highlighting student voices.
LPI states that LBUSD has historically incorporated standards in its schools that enable trusting relationships between adults and students, which supports student learning. These values align with LBUSD’s Vision 2035—The Adult Portrait, where staff members support and encourage students in their goals while possessing social-emotional intelligence to understand and appropriately respond to students’ feelings.
LBUSD leaders and educators have increased their attention to empathy building across the district to allow students and staff to learn alongside each other. Long Beach Unified School District continues to strive for improvements to provide a better future for its students.
