LBUSD Welcomes First Black Student Board Member, Chimnazaekpere Nwala
Long Beach Unified School District Proudly Welcomes Chimnazaekpere Nwala, a Senior at Ernest McBride High School, as the Newest Student Board Member.
She makes history as the first Black student to serve in this role, bringing a powerful voice and fresh perspective to district leadership.
At her first Board meeting, Nwala expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support system that helped her reach this milestone:
“I would like to take this time to appreciate my mom, who’s been so extremely supportive, taking me to every single event, she drove me here (to this Board meeting), and has been super patient. I do want to thank everyone who came here to support me. My principal, my vice principal, and my former principal are all here. I want to highlight Dr. Lovett and Dr. Elyssa Taylor, who have been nothing short of amazing.”

Before Tuesday’s Board meeting, Nwala toured the Board building with Dr. Pam Lovett, met with senior team members, and was formally introduced to Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Brown. From left to right, Dr. Tiffany Brown, Chimnazaekpere Nwala, Dr. Jill Baker, and Dr. Pam Lovett.
Superintendent Dr. Baker applauded the significance of this moment, noting:
“We are excited to welcome Student Board Member Nwala to the Board of Education. Her leadership will help ensure that student voices remain influential in our decision-making.”
Nwala’s leadership is already well established at McBride. She serves as President of the Black Literary Society at McBride. Additionally, she is the Vice President of the school's Student Council, an active member of the Black Student Union, plays varsity volleyball, and partners with the school’s administration to manage McBride’s thrift shop, organizing clothing, shoes, and jewelry sales that directly support her peers. Looking ahead, she plans to attend Harvard College to pursue a career in medicine.
McBride Principal Stephanie Cooper added:
“She’s a remarkable leader who uplifts her classmates and partners with the school community to advance our mission. Focused, driven, and inspiring, she’s an all-around rockstar. She’s one to watch.”
With her passion, focus, and dedication, Nwala is poised to make an enduring impact on the Board and the entire LBUSD community.
