Currently enrolled in the Pipeline Leadership Program — ELTD (Equity, Leadership, Talent Development), Sandy aims to elevate her leadership skills. The rigorous program requires participants to delve into critical topics, including equity-focused leadership, effective communication, and strategic decision-making. Sandy embraces each challenge enthusiastically and actively seeks feedback, pushing herself to become a more impactful leader in the district.

Stacy Maciel
A trusted presence, a calming force, and a true unsung hero—we celebrate Ms. Stacy Maciel, Campus Security Assistant at McBride High School.
While her primary role is keeping the campus safe, Stacy’s impact extends beyond the security gates. She’s widely regarded as a “safe adult”—someone students know they can turn to in times of need. Whether it’s a personal challenge or a simple need for guidance, Stacy is there, ready to listen, support, and point them in the right direction.
What makes Stacy exceptional is her genuine connection with students. She takes the time to know them by name, understand their stories, and offer encouragement when needed. With her calm demeanor and compassionate heart, she helps students navigate challenging moments, encouraging them to make thoughtful and responsible decisions. Her presence is a source of comfort, especially for those who may feel they have nowhere else to turn.
Her dedication doesn’t end with students. She keeps the school's daily operations running smoothly, stepping in wherever needed without hesitation. From assisting with logistics to offering a helping hand, Stacy’s behind-the-scenes efforts do not go unnoticed. Visoth Sinoukear
A beacon of warmth, kindness, and genuine connection, we take a moment to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Visoth Sinoukear, (he goes by V), the Board Building’s Plant Supervisor.
With his ever-present smile and infectious personality, Mr. V can turn even ordinary interactions into moments of joy. Forget the spills and the cleaning supplies—Mr. V cleanses the space with his uplifting spirit, sharing words of encouragement and heartfelt conversations that brighten everyone’s day.
A man of quiet pride and unwavering humility, Mr. V is the definition of a true gentleman. He’s always ready to lend a helping hand, whether assisting a colleague, striking up a warm conversation, or simply listening to those who need it. His gentle nature and thoughtful demeanor create a calm and comfortable atmosphere throughout the building, making him a cherished presence on every floor.

Aqueelah Thabiti
Every school community has individuals whose presence quietly, humbly, and with deep, unwavering purpose transforms lives. Ms. Aqueelah Thabiti is one of those rare and extraordinary individuals. A counselor whose impact stretches far beyond her title, she embodies what a school counselor should be: hands-on, heart-forward, and wholly committed to students.
Whether guiding students through a personal challenge or celebrating their most minor victories, Ms. Thabiti approaches every interaction with care, patience, and compassion. To her, nothing is ever too big—or too small—to deserve her time and attention. For the past three years, she has generously poured her energy, expertise, and soul into the Black Student Achievement Initiative, which has been instrumental in supporting equity, leadership, and opportunity for Black students across the district.
Her passion for early learners is equally profound. As a dedicated educator, Ms. Thabiti shares her knowledge freely, uplifting her colleagues and advancing the success of our youngest scholars. She leads without needing the spotlight, carrying herself with humility while standing shoulder-to-shoulder—and often head and shoulders above—with the most committed changemakers in our schools.
Ms. Aqueelah Thabiti is not just a counselor. She is a cornerstone of compassion, a quiet force of excellence, and a gift to every student, staff member, and family she serves.
Suzanne Caverly
Suzanne Caverly is a principal who doesn’t just lead Wilson High School — she lives it. Whether walking the campus in her signature heels or picking up trash herself, Suzanne’s presence is felt everywhere. But her style is more than fashion — it reflects her commitment to being present and making a lasting impact.
Suzanne is out on the quad, connecting with students, asking about their day, and listening to their stories. She knows her students by name and makes it a point to celebrate their accomplishments, big or small. It’s not uncommon to see her surrounded by students, leaning in with genuine interest, as she fosters a culture of warmth and inclusivity, a uniquely Suzanne trait.
Her dedication doesn’t stop at the school gates. Suzanne attends every game, event, and Board meeting where Wilson students are present. When she can’t make it in person, she sends messages of encouragement on her Instagram, reminding students she’s always in their corner.
When the Center of Black Student Excellence opened its doors on Saturday, May 3, Suzanne was poised, present, and proudly supporting students. It’s not just about being seen; it’s about being there and showing up for her school and community day after day.
Ms. Caverly is a powerhouse — a connector, a role model, and a relentless advocate for her students. Today, we celebrate Suzanne’s substance, the way she shows up, the way she listens, and the way she leads with heart and authenticity. Wilson High School is a better place because of her.
Sarah Schol
Ms. Sarah Schol stands out in education as a beacon of excellence and inspiration. As both an extraordinary teacher and the esteemed chair of the English department at Poly, Ms. Schol has earned the deep respect of her colleagues and the admiration of her students. Her approach to teaching is characterized by a powerful blend of encouragement, respect, and a belief in her students’ potential. Whether guiding them through complex literary analyses or pushing them to refine their writing, Ms. Schol is a relentless advocate, urging her students to aim higher and strive for excellence.
Beyond her classroom, she plays a pivotal part in the culture and climate at Poly as the advisor for both the male and female leadership academy, helping students develop positive self-esteem, identity, and leadership skills.
Ms. Schol’s impact extends to her department, where she leads with vision, compassion, and a focus on impactful learning. She actively empowers facilitators, encouraging them to explore and implement engagement strategies that resonate with high school learners. By modeling the Vision 2035 Adult Portrait, she champions student success and uplifts her fellow educators, creating a culture of continuous learning and shared achievement. Gabriela Gutierrez
Gabriela Gutierrez, Instructional Office Assistant at Burcham Elementary, keeps the office running smoothly in the absence of the Office Supervisor. Whether assisting students when no nurse is present or managing office duties precisely, Gabby is a steady force who always shows up with a positive attitude and a heart full of service. Despite working four hours a day, she consistently goes above and beyond, making every minute count with her exceptional efficiency and unwavering dedication.
Gabby’s journey at Burcham began years ago as a Rec Aide, and her commitment to learning and growing has never wavered. Determined to expand her role, she’s pushed herself to master the responsibilities of an IOA and aspires to become an Office Supervisor. Not only does she stay up to date with training, but she also seeks opportunities to lend a helping hand across the school, making herself an indispensable part of the Burcham team. Gabby’s that clutch colleague, a reliable problem-solver who brings calm to even the busiest days.
Her presence radiates warmth and positivity, creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone she encounters. Her site colleagues speak highly of her, praising her as a pleasure to work with and an asset to the school. Whether connecting with students, supporting staff, or stepping in wherever needed, Gabby exemplifies the spirit of service, embodying what it means to be a true everyday hero at Burcham Elementary.
Jonathan Hawkins
Jonathan Hawkins, an RSP teacher at SATO Academy of Mathematics and Science, is a powerful force for belonging, brilliance, and student connection in Long Beach Unified. Originally from the East Coast, Mr. Hawkins brings a soulful passion for music—and people—into everything he does. Step into his classroom on any given day, and you’ll hear it: calming melodies, ambient beats, and music that wraps students in warmth and welcome. It’s not just background noise—it’s an intentional environment of peace, inclusion, and possibility.
Mr. Hawkins is a proud sponsor of the Black Student Union at SATO, helping foster leadership, cultural pride, and identity development among Black students. Through purposeful programming and hands-on mentorship, he creates space for students to find their voice, build community, and feel deeply seen and supported. From powerful lunchtime conversations to meaningful leadership activities, his efforts build futures and change lives.
Mr. Hawkins leads one of the school's most beloved Black History Month celebrations every February. Using his resources and generosity, he curates a soul food experience that feeds far more than hunger. Partnering with a local chef and with the full support of SATO’s principal, he brings students and staff together over plates of history, culture, and joy. It’s not just a meal—it’s a moment, a memory, and a reminder of the profound care he brings to his role every day.
Yes, Mr. Hawkins is a teacher. But he uplifts, inspires, and reminds us what it truly means to serve.
