The Long Beach Unified School District is proudly celebrating Lunar New Year by honoring the rich diversity of our community and recognizing the traditions that bring us together.

Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the new zodiac cycle and is celebrated by millions of people around the world, commonly across Asian countries. In 2026, the Year of the Horse began on February 17, marking the first new moon of the lunar calendar. The festivities continue for sixteen days and include bringing families and communities together to enjoy delicious meals, honor traditions, and welcome good fortune.

Several schools, including Fremont, Kettering, Los Cerritos, and Naples, created opportunities for students and families to celebrate the Lunar New Year together.

At Los Cerritos, students attended an assembly led by the Shaolin Temple Kung Fu school, with many wearing bright red to share their excitement and support. Naples campus brought together students, families, and staff for a celebration filled with music, food, art, and a traditional Dragon Dance, highlighting the many cultures represented in the school community. Kettering students created colorful paper lanterns to decorate their hallways and shared lucky grams, spreading good fortune and kindness. Fremont continued its tradition of community celebration, as the Fremont PTA and Principal Chris Lounsbery welcomed families to Lunar New Year Community Night, featuring the Jade Lotus Dance Lion performance, local treats, a wishing tree for sharing hopes, and raffles for Lunar New Year books.

Thank you to our schools for supporting the Vision 2035 goals and helping all students and adults feel valued by celebrating and respecting the many cultures in our community!
