LBSA Prepares Adult Learners for Promising Careers
Long Beach School for Adults (LBSA) in the Long Beach Unified School District provides a stepping stone for adult learners to reach their educational aspirations.
LBSA's Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses are designed to provide hands-on experience, practical training and industry-specific insights that enable students to acquire valuable expertise and stay competitive in today's job market.
Currently, LBSA offers four CTE courses that fulfill the entry-level requirements for careers in the following fields:
- Animal Care — LBSA offers four levels of courses that provide students with the necessary skills and internship training experience to obtain and maintain careers that involve working with animals.
- Custodial Services — The course prepares students for a custodial career in LBUSD through workshops held in partnership with the District’s Personnel Commission and Equity Leadership and Talent Development Office.
- Campus Security Officer — The completion of this course meets the mandated training requirements to work as a security guard in K-12 schools and community college districts.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) — Offered in partnership with the Los Angeles Skills Academy, the course equips aspiring CNAs with the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the state exam for licensure.
Upon completing these courses, students are well-prepared to confidently enter the workforce and succeed in their chosen career paths.
In addition to employment development courses, LBSA offers academic programs to assist students over the age of 18 in achieving their educational goals regardless of their stage in life. These programs include English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education and courses designed to help students earn their High School Diploma or pass the High School Equivalency Test.
LBSA is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and operates September through June with free classes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The average age of enrolled students is between 45 to 55 years old. Enrollment is open throughout the year with classes filling quickly.
