Harte Welcomes Mayor to School Garden
Fourth grade students from Bret Harte Elementary School greeted Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson with high-fives and handmade letters as he arrived to learn more about the school’s garden.
The school garden at Harte provides dynamic health and wellness education to its young learners and is maintained by Ground Education, a nonprofit organization that helps teach robust lessons in elementary school gardens.
The Long Beach Unified School District partners with Ground Education to manage garden learning programs at 22 schools. The nonprofit brings hands-on lessons and helps create green spaces on school grounds.
“It was so good to be here at [Harte] with a group of fourth graders who are learning the very fundamentals of agriculture,” shared Mayor Richardson. “You can have a long day as mayor but you stop by one of our great Long Beach schools and you are always inspired for the future after you talk with these young [students].”
