CABRILLO’S DRONE SOCCER TEAM TRIUMPHS AS U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
[LONG BEACH, CA., May 7, 2024] - Cabrillo High School’s Drone Soccer Team, The Flying Jags, soared to victory at the esteemed United States Drone Soccer National Championship, showcasing exceptional skill, teamwork and innovation in the rapidly expanding sport of drone soccer. Led by their exemplary Captain Giovanni Tuon, the team consisting of talented students, Andres Ibarra, Valerie Soto, Stephanie Salgado, Nathan Warren and Jesus Zavala, defied the odds and conquered the competition to claim the coveted national title.
In a thrilling display of agility and strategy, the Cabrillo High School team faced off against formidable opponents from across the nation, demonstrating their prowess in maneuvering drones with precision and finesse. Their dedication to mastering this cutting-edge sport was evident as they navigated through intense matches, showcasing not only their technical proficiency but also their unwavering determination to succeed.
“The victory at the U.S. Drone Soccer National Championship is a testament to the hard work, perseverance and collaborative spirit of the Cabrillo High School Drone Soccer Team,” said Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jill A. Baker. “Their remarkable achievement showcases the innovative spirit and dedication to excellence that we strive to instill in all our students. We commend them for their outstanding performance and congratulate them on this well-deserved success.”
Principal My Ngoc Nguyen expressed profound pride in the team’s accomplishment, stating, “We are incredibly proud of our students for their outstanding achievement in becoming the U.S. National Champions in drone soccer. Their dedication, teamwork and passion for this e-sport have truly set them apart and we congratulate them on this well-deserved victory.”
The team’s success also reflects the dedication of their teachers, who provided support and encouragement throughout their journey. Teachers Marco Flores and Ken Fisher played instrumental roles in guiding the team, helping them hone their skills and fostering a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship.
As champions, the Cabrillo High School Flying Jags team serves as an inspiration to aspiring flyers on the west side of Long Beach, paving the way for the future of this exhilarating sport. Next, the Cabrillo Flying Jags will represent the United States in an international tournament in Hong Kong, China, in October. Their remarkable journey exemplifies the power of determination, perseverance and teamwork to achieve extraordinary success.
