Long Beach Unified School District is proud to celebrate the extraordinary dedication and impact of our Classified Employee of the Year. This year, for only the third time in our district’s history—and the first since 2016—we are honored to recognize two outstanding recipients. Craig Foster and Melisa Whitecotton have left profound marks on our district, each embodying our Vision 2035 Adult Portrait, the very best of what it means to serve our schools, staff, and students.

Craig Foster: A Legacy of Precision and Purpose

He’s a powerhouse behind the scenes, making the magic happen for Long Beach Unified School District. For years, Craig Foster, Reprographics Supervisor, has been the quiet force that takes the district's vision and transforms it into reality, one meticulously printed poster, booklet, and brochure at a time.

When you step onto a campus, see a vibrant banner celebrating student achievements, or read a program at a district event, know that Craig Foster’s fingerprints are all over it. Under his leadership, Duplicating Services has evolved from a simple copy shop into a cutting-edge production center, churning everything from postcards and test sheets to banners and high-quality graphic designs — all while embodying the district’s mission to educate, engage, and inspire.

But Craig’s impact goes far beyond paper and ink. He’s the kind of leader who makes every team member feel valued, a man who turns the mundane into memorable by infusing his work with passion, heart, and purpose. Whether pulling a last-minute print run for a significant event or helping a colleague under pressure, Craig is the rock his team can always count on. And he doesn’t just get the job done, he elevates it!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when urgent communications became critical, Craig and his team rose to the occasion, producing crucial signage and safety materials at a moment’s notice. Most recently, Craig’s innovative thinking led to the creation of onboarding “swag bags” for nearly 700 new classified employees, repurposing excess items to save costs while making each new staff member feel welcomed and appreciated.

Craig reflected on the honor, “I wish the entire Duplicating Department could be here with me. It’s a team effort. I’m here because of the people I work with, 100%.”

Craig’s relentless dedication to excellence and his unwavering commitment to the district’s mission make him a standout leader and human being. He’s the guy who greets everyone with a smile, asks, “How can we help you?” and genuinely means it. He’s the pulse of Duplicating Services — the man who keeps the wheels turning and does so with heart, humility, and a deep sense of purpose.

Congratulations, Craig Foster! You’re the Classified Employee of the Year and a shining example of what it means to lead, inspire, and make every moment count.

Melisa Whitecotton: The Heartbeat of Newcomb Academy

At Newcomb Academy, Melisa Whitecotton is the fabric of the campus. A beacon of warmth and positivity, Melisa embodies what it means to go above and beyond for students, staff, and families. Whether orchestrating enriching outdoor play experiences or helping anyone in need, Melisa is a true Newcomb gem.

With a smile that can light up a room and a heart as big as her dedication, she is the person everyone turns to for support. Need a listening ear? She’s there. Looking for a creative solution to a student’s challenge? Melisa’s already on it, thinking outside the box and finding ways to elevate every moment into a meaningful connection. Her friendly, open, and insightful nature has made her a beloved figure among students and staff, a fixture of encouragement, kindness, and unwavering support.

However, Melisa’s impact goes far beyond her job title. She’s a mentor, a cheerleader, and, as some affectionately say, “the heartbeat of Newcomb.” Her warmth radiates through the halls, transforming the campus into a welcoming haven where every child feels seen and every staff member feels valued.

Melisa Whitecotton is more than just a Recreation Aide. She’s a champion of compassion, a symbol of steadfast commitment, and a bright light that Newcomb Academy can’t imagine being without. Congratulations, Melisa! Your infectious positivity and boundless dedication continue to impact the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know you.

In her words, Melisa said with heartfelt surprise, “I love my work family, I love Newcomb. I never thought I’d win; I’m in shock.”
