Long Beach Unified Celebrates Black History Month

Long Beach Unified proudly celebrates Black History Month, honoring the rich contributions of African Americans who have shaped our nation's history. From trailblazers in education and civil rights to pioneers in science, the arts, and beyond, their achievements inspire us all. This month serves as a time to reflect, learn, and recognize the profound impact Black leaders have had–and continue to have–on our society. As part of our commitment to Black excellence, we are excited to announce the grand opening of our Center of Black Student Excellence this April. This new space will serve as a learning, empowerment, and community engagement hub. We look forward to welcoming our LBUSD families once we have an official date.

As part of our celebration, we spoke with three students about what Black History Month means to them and why the nation needs to commemorate this history. Their voices remind us that this month is not just about looking back but about uplifting and empowering the next generation. They shared stories of resilience, pride, and hope, emphasizing the importance of representation and education's role in fostering understanding and unity. Their perspectives reinforce why spaces like the Center of Black Student Excellence are essential in providing students with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration needed to succeed.

At LBUSD, our commitment to Black students is unwavering. We champion excellence and equity by ensuring every student has access to the resources, opportunities and support they need to thrive. Black history is American history, and we remain dedicated to creating inclusive learning environments where all students feel valued, seen and empowered to achieve their dreams. We encourage our entire LBUSD community to celebrate this month and visit the Center of Black Student Excellence when it officially opens this spring.
