Celebrating Black History, Culture, and Student Voice: The Sankofa Summer Academy of Excellence

2025 sankofa event with students

Step inside Holmes Elementary this summer, and you would have entered a celebration of Black student scholarship and cultural pride. The Sankofa Summer Academy of Excellence Celebration of Learning was the culminating event of a four-week Black Studies program that invited students in grades 3–8 to take ownership of their learning through in-depth study and student-driven research presentations.

Now in its fourth year, the Sankofa Academy of Excellence centers culturally sustaining instruction, Black history, and storytelling as tools for affirmation, liberation, and academic excellence. Throughout the program, students explored a wide range of historical and contemporary topics connected to Black culture, identity, and contribution. The Celebration of Learning was a showcase of what they had discovered; students proudly presented on topics they had chosen, from trailblazing inventors and civil rights icons to the significance of Africa and African symbols.

Walking through each classroom, it was clear that this was not a traditional school environment. Every space radiated intention, care, and joy. In Ms. Tamia Jones’ room, there were no rows of desks: just plush rugs, bean bags, bar stools, a rocking chair, and a communal table. This space was created by kids, for kids, with kids in mind. It’s their sanctuary, a place where they feel safe to express themselves and take pride in their learning.

That spirit of belonging and empowerment echoed throughout the school. The hallways were lined with student-created displays honoring Black scholars, activists, and artists, each presentation a window into the depth of students' curiosity and connection to their cultural heritage. Their work demonstrated what they learned, revealing who they are becoming.

“The goal is simple,” said Dr. Pam Lovett, Excellence and Equity Coordinator for LBUSD’s Black Student Achievement Initiative. “We want our students to know their history, see themselves in the curriculum, and feel proud of who they are. When students are empowered with that knowledge, they grow academically, socially, and emotionally.”

The celebration extended beyond classrooms, where the community buzzed with joy. Families gathered to cheer on students and witness powerful performances, including two student-led dance routines that brought the crowd to its feet.

The Sankofa Summer Academy of Excellence Celebration was a powerful reminder of what happens when Black students are encouraged to study their history, express their brilliance, and stand firmly in their identities. In this space, they were seen, heard, and honored as researchers, creators, and future leaders.
