Students from the Long Beach Unified School District celebrated Muslim American Heritage Month, honoring the rich culture and heritage of their Muslim peers.

Over the past decade, more than a dozen states, along with cities, counties, and school districts, have formally recognized Muslim American Heritage Month. Although the months of celebration vary by state, January has become the most popular time to honor the many contributions of Muslim Americans to society, including the arts, literature, sciences, and public service. This observance is a wonderful opportunity to build appreciation and deepen understanding of the incredible impact and diverse history of Muslim communities across the United States.

At the California Academy of Math and Science, staff and students created a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged students to explore and honor Muslim heritage. Throughout the month, the campus was adorned with colorful flyers and banners featuring inspirational quotes from notable Muslim figures, thoughtfully created by CAMS Mentors to promote learning and reflection. Students additionally had the opportunity to engage in a variety of meaningful Muslim cultural experiences. CAMS Mentors introduced students to halal treats and henna tattoos, offering a hands-on way to experience cultural traditions. CAMS ASB hosted a creative coloring station focused on mosaic designs with artistic patterns commonly found in Muslim art.

The celebration culminated in Muslim Culture Jeopardy, where students tested their knowledge and deepened their understanding of Muslim culture and history, with prizes awarded to participants. Through these events, CAMS strengthened its commitment to celebrating diversity and creating an inclusive campus where all students feel seen, valued, and respected.

LBUSD is proud to highlight the diversity of the Long Beach community and strives to provide a sense of belonging and value through embracing and respecting all cultures as part of our Vision 2023 goals.
