Building a Culture of Inclusion and Friendship at Lowell Elementary

At Lowell Elementary, dedicated educators Mrs. Herbas and Mrs. Jorda enthusiastically promote inclusivity and build strong connections within their classrooms through their new Friendship Club.

Both teachers are remarkable in their fields, with Mrs. Herbas leading 4th and 5th grade Special Day Classes and Mrs. Jorda guiding GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) programs. Inspired by a practice that brings students together, the two educators share a common goal to encourage understanding and promote a strong sense of belonging.

By celebrating the intersections where their students can unite, they create an environment where classrooms learn from one another and build meaningful friendships. This initiative built the foundation for the Friendship Club, a space where students experience inclusivity, develop empathy, practice social skills and have a sense of community beyond the classroom.

Friendship Club is composed of intentional activities, collaborative projects and peer interactions, allowing students to see each other as teammates rather than just classmates. As a practice, the two classes meet three times a week for Physical Fitness, where students engage in activities that promote community-building and standards-based skills. Through movement, teamwork, and shared goals, students strengthen their bodies and connections while highlighting the power of diversity in learning styles and abilities.

By embracing differences and finding common ground, Mrs. Herbas and Mrs. Jorda are shaping a school culture where every scholar feels valued, supported and connected through the Friendship Club.
