Retired Educator is Woman of Year
Retired principal Cynthia Terry has earned the Woman of the Year Award from the Assistance League of Long Beach. Terry will be recognized Friday, April 1 at the 66th annual Woman of the Year luncheon celebration in Seal Beach.
The Assistance League of Long Beach is a longtime community partner of the Long Beach Unified School District. During the 2019-20 school year, the league’s signature program Operation School Bell provided more than 12,000 LBUSD students with new school uniforms and school supplies. In 1994, LBUSD became the first public school district in the nation to adopt school uniforms in kindergarten through eighth grade. The Assistance League and Operation School Bell played an instrumental role in the success of the widely emulated uniform initiatives taking place at other school districts nationwide.
Terry has been recognized with numerous other awards, including the 2019 Helen D. Newcomb Award from the Junior League of Long Beach; the 2013 Press Telegram Amazing Women Lifetime Achievement Award; the 2016 Assistance League of Long Beach President’s Award and the 2017 Make a Difference Award for exemplary leadership and service; the 2018 CCEJ Humanitarian Award; and in 2019, the Long Beach NAACP Passing the Torch of Leadership Award. Most recently, Terry was inducted to Long Beach City College’s Alumni Hall of Fame.
