Middle School Girls Attend STEM Conference
More than 200 middle school girls from the Long Beach Unified School District recently attended the 18th annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Career Conference hosted by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Long Beach.
The conference held at Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science highlighted 10 STEM careers including architect; civil engineer; coroner; environmental engineer; financial advisor; hydrologist; paleontologist; public health nurse; software engineer and structural engineer.
In attendance were 7th and 8th grade students from LBUSD Title I schools including Franklin, Hamilton, Lindbergh, Muir, Powell, Robinson and Washington.
The conference featured keynote speaker Taryn Williams, a Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach graduate and presently a Ph.D. student and graduate research assistant at University of California, Irvine. Students also attended workshops with women in STEM professions to gain an understanding of the work involved, possible career paths and necessary steps to achieving success.
“My sincere thanks to the volunteers, speakers and facilitators of this year’s conference!” said AAUW Long Beach Co-President Virginia (Ginny) Baxter. “One day soon, one of our student attendees will share their journey to success as a keynote speaker, crediting our STEM career conference for sparking a passion.”
Since 1911, AAUW Long Beach has been actively involved in the community to advance gender equality for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.
