School Opening Update from Superintendent Baker

Jill Baker

View in Khmer

Dear LBUSD Community,

As promised, I am coming to you with another update on our opening of school plans. Our educators and support staff have been working diligently to prepare the best possible learning options for our students while keeping safety as our top priority in light of the coronavirus pandemic. We continue to consider the evolving guidance from state and local health and education agencies, and we are pleased to share our School Opening and Safety Plan for 2020-21. This plan also can be found at lbschools.net/coronavirus, where we will continue to provide updates. In the coming days, we also will provide translations of this plan in Spanish and Khmer. Topics in the plan include:

  • Health and Safety Protocols
  • COVID-19 Testing and Reporting
  • Facility Cleaning and Sanitization Protocols
  • Instructional Programs
  • Special Education and Mental Health
  • Athletics and Extracurricular Activities

As was shared in last week’s community message, school offices are available to answer questions about instructional programs and the specifics of their school operations. Soon, you will begin to hear from schools about the process for picking up learning materials, for checking out Chromebooks and for support on how to use our new learning management system that will directly connect every student and family to teachers and staff.

We are making progress in the formal bargaining process with the Teachers Association of Long Beach to finalize further details regarding the new school year, and we hope to provide another update early next week.

Thank you for your support and patience as we continue to navigate through this time as a community.

With gratitude,

Jill Baker
