Grads Earn High Honors, $18 Million in Scholarships

Graduating seniors here earned more than $18 million in scholarships, along with numerous non-monetary honors and admissions to prestigious colleges and universities. The Class of 2007 amassed $18,350,160 in scholarships to reduce college costs, including full rides to dozens of institutions. Wilson Classical High School students earned more than $4.4 million in scholarships, a new record for the school. Wilson graduates have been admitted to all campuses of the University of California system. Others will attend Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Georgetown and Williams. More than 25 full ride scholarships were earned, along with five Long Beach Bar Association scholarships. One student received an ROTC award worth $180,000. Thirteen students earned 4.0 or better grade point averages. California Academy of Mathematics and Science students earned scholarships and acceptance to Amherst, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, MIT, Harvey Mudd, NYU, Pomona College, Rice, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, USC, Williams and Yale. CAMS this year boasts eight National Hispanic Scholars. At Polytechnic High School, three students earned admission to MIT and four students were accepted to Stanford. Other acceptances included Harvard and the Manhattan School of Music. Scholarships included full tuition to Boston College, a Grinnell College scholarship valued at $33,900 per year, and a Swarthmore Merit Scholarship of $45,000 per year. Millikan High School students earned acceptance and scholarships to all UC and CSU campuses, West Point, Howard, Mills, Willamette and Chapman. Scholarships included the NAACP Gold Oratory and Asian Pacific Islander Scholarship Fund awards. Honors included a city Leadership Award and the Lion's Club Debate Award. Lakewood High School students earned scholarships to Notre Dame, CSULB, Chapman, and other schools. Forty-four scholars achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or above, with students admitted to several UC schools, USC and Pepperdine. Twelve students earned renewable scholarships from the Rotary Club. Cabrillo High School students earned full-ride scholarships to CSULB and UC Irvine, and scholarships from Rotary and Operation Jump Start. Other awards included the NAACP ACT-SO honor. Acceptances included several UC campuses, Spelman College, Hampton University and Mount St. Mary's College. Jordan High School students earned two Gates Millennium scholarships, a Tuskegee University Academic Achievement Scholarship, Congresswoman Juanita McDonald Leadership Award, University of New Mexico Football Scholarship, Carl Cohn Scholarship and an Edison International Public Education Scholarship. Acceptances included 13 campuses of the CSU system, Loyola of Chicago, Mills, Notre Dame, Robert Morris University, most campuses of the UC system, University of Nevada Las Vegas, USC and Upper Iowa University. Renaissance High School for the Arts students earned scholarships to CSULB and USC, along with awards from the Children's Trust Fund, Long Beach Bar Association and Wal-Mart. Renaissance students gained admission to UC and CSU campuses as well as Clark Atlanta University. Twenty LBUSD high school seniors were presented either $2,500 or $1,000 scholarships by the Long Beach Regional California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP).
