Black Literary Society Hosts Dr. Jarvis R. Givens for Black History Month's Centennial Celebration

As part of the centennial celebration of Black History Month, the Black Literary Society hosted a learning experience with Harvard Professor Jarvis R. Givens at the Center of Black Student Excellence. The event honored the contributions and voices of Black students, families, and the Long Beach community, and reinforced our shared commitment to belonging and opportunity for all.

The LBUSD Black Literary Society has worked with Dr. Givens before, supporting students’ academic, intellectual, and cultural growth through shared reading experiences.

During this workshop, Dr.Givens shared how families, educators, and community members have come together over the years to document, teach, and celebrate Black History, offering ideas for continuing these important traditions alive, and also introduced his new book, “I'll Make Me a World: The Hundred Year Journey of Black History Month.”

In the novel “I’ll Make Me a World,” Dr. Givens shares his personal and professional journey through the 100-year history of Black History Month, from its origins in 1926 as Negro History Week to today’s celebration. Drawing on his research and personal stories about family and students, he highlights the legacy of Carter G. Woodson and others who saw Black history as a force for liberation. The book offers an inspiring vision of Black History as a source of power, truth, and possibility.
