Birney Elementary Hosts “Soleil the Sea Lion” Book Launch with Port of Long Beach

Students at Birney Elementary School on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, celebrated the launch of “Soleil the Sea Lion Explores the Green Port” in partnership with the Port of Long Beach.

Birney Elementary School fosters a welcoming, engaging environment that encourages students to grow academically and develop strong values. By working closely with families and the community, the school is dedicated to helping every student reach their fullest potential.

That commitment to learning and community partnerships was on display when students celebrated “Soleil the Sea Lion Explores the Green Port” in partnership with the Port of Long Beach. The project followed a yearlong collaboration between Birney Principal Katiria Hernandez and the Port of Long Beach to bring the story to life for students.

Held during Read Across America Month, the event highlighted the joy of reading and the power of books to open doors to imagination, learning, and opportunity. The new children’s book tells the story of a young sea lion who discovers friendship and environmental stewardship in Long Beach Harbor.

As part of the celebration, every LBUSD elementary and K-8 school library will receive a copy of the book, and students across the district will be invited to participate in a bookmark design contest themed “Our Power, Our Planet.” The book will additionally be available in Spanish, Khmer, and Tagalog editions soon.

The event brought together LBUSD school leaders, Port of Long Beach CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba, Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker, and the Birney community to celebrate literacy, partnership, and a shared commitment to inspiring young readers.
