An Unscripted Moment, a Lasting Legacy: Jordan High School Honors Superintendent Dr. Jill A. Baker

Some of the most meaningful moments in public education are never planned. They emerge when gratitude rises naturally. When students, educators, and community members pause to recognize leadership that made a real difference.

That was the case at Jordan High School, where, in an unannounced and heartfelt moment, the school community surprised Superintendent Dr. Jill A. Baker with a commemorative plaque recognizing her instrumental role in bringing Jordan’s new blue turf field stadium to life.

Installed permanently at the stadium’s entrance, the plaque stands as both a thank-you and a testament, one rooted in equity, perseverance, and belief in North Long Beach students.

For Jordan High School students and student-athletes, the new blue turf field represents far more than a visual upgrade. It is a symbol of access, safety, pride, and parity, a space where young people compete, perform, gather, and grow, and where lessons learned on the field translate into confidence beyond it.

Students were keenly aware that other schools already had turf fields. Jordan did not. That disparity mattered. It shaped how students viewed themselves and how they believed the system viewed them. Now, when they step onto the field, they do so knowing their school was worthy of the same investment, the same standards, and the same belief. Already, the field has become a site of historic firsts, including the first touchdown by senior Marcus Williams, who broke the school record for touchdowns in a game. “That first touchdown on our new field was a thank you to Dr. Baker,” he said. “Big props to her for making this happen for our football team, and for Jordan.”

The stadium also represents a long-overdue investment in the North Long Beach community. For years, Jordan leaders and students advocated for equity, not special treatment, but fair footing. After navigating roadblocks and challenges, that advocacy ultimately led to action. Today, the field stands as a community anchor, a place where families gather, school pride is renewed, and equity is visible.

Behind this achievement is Superintendent Dr. Baker, whose leadership proved pivotal. After nearly a year of advocacy and obstacles, she helped move the project forward, ensuring Jordan High School received the turf field it had long sought and deserved. Her role was not symbolic; it was instrumental, and students noticed. They understood the difference between words and outcomes.

“This was never about a field or a plaque; it was about students being seen, valued, and given what they deserve,” Dr. Baker said. “I’m deeply grateful to the Jordan community for their trust, their advocacy, and their heart.”

That understanding sparked the idea for the plaque itself, especially among students who see Dr. Baker as a role model, leader, and champion; there was a shared desire to express gratitude. Girls across programs, student leaders, and athletes expressed admiration for her leadership and respect for what she represents. The plaque was their idea, their voice, their gratitude, etched permanently into the space they now call their own. “This field means everything to us,  said Senior Janiah Lorn, who plays flag football. “It gives Jordan a new start. It represents pride and joy. I thank Dr. Baker for believing in Jordan, fighting for us, and making sure we finally have what we deserved.

Principal Keisha Irving and the Jordan High School community chose to present the plaque not during a staged ceremony, but in a quiet, unscripted moment, one that reflected the sincerity behind it. “Dr. Baker heard our community, believed in our students, and helped turn years of advocacy into action,” Irving said. “This field is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when leadership and community come together.”

The plaque honors Dr. Baker’s vision, leadership, and steadfast dedication to excellence and equity, recognizing the stadium as a testament to her commitment to both education and the North Long Beach community, where the field now stands, and the plaque remains, each marking a legacy made permanent.
