LBUSD Welcomes New Student Board Member Alaina Castillo

Long Beach Unified School District proudly welcomes Alaina Castillo, a rising senior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, as the District’s newest Student Board Member.

Castillo brings an impressive record of leadership, service, and student advocacy to the Board of Education. She will serve as the voice of LBUSD’s students, helping ensure student perspectives continue to shape District decision-making.

Board President Diana Craighead said:

“It is my pleasure to welcome Alaina to the Long Beach Unified Board of Education. She has already demonstrated exceptional leadership, compassion and a commitment to serve others. I look forward to the perspective she will bring as we work together on behalf of all LBUSD students.”

Superintendent David Zaid added:

“We are honored to welcome Alaina to the Board of Education. She is a scholar and champion who leads by serving others, listening to her peers, and creating opportunities for students. I look forward to learning from her insights as we continue building a District where every student feels seen, heard, and inspired to reach their highest potential. Her service and voice will help strengthen the future of LBUSD.”

Castillo has established herself as an exceptional student leader at Poly. She was elected Associated Student Body President for the 2026-27 school year after previously serving as ASB Secretary. She is also the Model UN Vice President, the President of Best Buddies, and the Co-Captain of the Varsity Cheer team.

Her commitment to service extends beyond campus. Castillo founded Jackrabbits for Equity, Inclusion, & Change, an organization that annually presents equity research to CSULB faculty and students. She also led a community public health initiative that trained nearly 200 residents in Narcan administration and opioid overdose response. This summer, she is serving as a volunteer intern with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, where she continues expanding her passion for public service.

With her leadership, compassion, and dedication to serving others, Castillo is poised to make a meaningful impact on the Board of Education and throughout the LBUSD community.
