A Lasting Contribution: Honoring Excellence, Dedication and Dreams in LBUSD
In a celebration that will be remembered for years to come, Long Beach Unified gathered at Browning High School on Tuesday, January 28, for A Lasting Contribution, our inaugural district-wide employee celebration. This extraordinary evening was dedicated to honoring the remarkable contributions of retiring staff, recent doctoral graduates, and employees whose achievements have garnered recognition at the local, state and national levels. It was a night filled with gratitude, inspiration, and heartfelt tributes to the dedicated individuals who shape the lives of our students daily.
Honoring the Scholars Among Us
The evening began with a moment of profound admiration as we recognized Dr. Stacie Alexander, Dr. Lori Andrews, Dr. Danyett Armstrong-Lee, Dr. Torrie Baker, Dr. Sunday Dominguez, Dr. Tanya Ennover, Dr. Angelica Gonzalez, Dr. Janelle Harmon, Dr. Katie Hickox, Dr. Brooke Hogan-Primous, Dr. Wendy Ili, Dr. Veronica Madrigal, Dr. Michael Navia, Dr. Brenda Ocampo, Dr. Osvaldo Ocampo, Chibuzor Ojinna, Dr. Leslie Saito, Dr. Renee Shipman, Dr. Sashya Tullo, Dr. Nader Twal, Dr. Alejandro Vega and Dr. Carrie Wiley who recently earned their doctoral degree.
One by one, these scholars shared the depth of their research, illustrating how their work directly impacts students and the broader educational landscape. Among them, Dr. Wendy Ili, Assistant Principal at Lakewood High School, spoke passionately about her research, White Principals Implementing Systems of Equity: Analyzing Knowledge, Motivation, and Organizational Support. She emphasized the urgent need for school leaders to be intentional about inclusivity and community engagement, stating:
“Equity must be more than a buzzword—it must be a lived practice. White principals must incorporate input from parents and the community to ensure relevance and inclusivity. We need explicit instruction on practical tools and strategies for implementing equity-focused practices, and we must establish clear accountability measures to support and sustain equitable outcomes. Change starts with us!”
Her words resonated deeply, serving as a powerful reminder that education is not just about curriculum–it’s about justice, access, and the unwavering commitment to uplift every student.
A Celebration of Service and Achievement
Following the inspiring discussion, guests transitioned to Browning MPR, where they were immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of beauty and warmth. The space—elegantly designed with meticulous care—was a masterpiece crafted by Cindy Von Arx, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Superintendent. From the stunning decor to the delicious appetizers, every detail reflected her dedication and artistry. Ms. Cindy, we thank you!
The formal program commenced with a heartfelt welcome from Board President Diana Craighead and Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker, setting the tone for an evening of deep appreciation and celebration. "Your dedication to Excellence and Equity makes A Lasting Contribution to our students, families and the community we serve," Dr. Baker said. "As we celebrate your accomplishments and express our gratitude, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideals that unite us all: inspiring each other, nurturing our students and continually striving for a brighter future. Thank you for the role you've played in who we are and where we are going - together with our 63,000 students, we are Long Beach Unified!"
The audience erupted in cheers and even tears as we honored Mariajose Carnicero, Shirley Hoban, Carmen Padilla Flores, Ralph Siemsen, Patrizia Thompson and Luana Wesley for their countless years of service to LBUSD’s students and families. Each retiree leaves behind a legacy of impact—stories of mentorship, guidance, and unwavering dedication to the mission of education. Their work has shaped generations, and their contributions will continue to ripple through our schools and community long after their departure.
Next, Lorian Steider Brady, Veronica Mejorado, Dr. Chibuzor Ojinna and Valerie Vinnard were recognized for their outstanding achievements—exemplars of what it means to go above and beyond service to students, colleagues and the community. Their dedication, innovative spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence have earned them well-deserved recognition. In them, we see the embodiment of LBUSD’s commitment to excellence, a shining example of what is possible when passion meets purpose.
Closing with a Call to Dream and Persevere
As the night drew to a close, we came full circle, once again, celebrating our 22 doctoral graduates—visionaires whose relentless pursuit of knowledge will continue to shape the future of education. As they shook hands and took photos with Board of Education members President Diana Craighead, Vice-President Douglas Otto, Maria Isabel López, Dr. Juan Benitez, Student Board Member Alana Arroyo and LBUSD’s leadership team, it was clear: this was more than a moment of recognition—it was a promise of what is to come.
Then, to seal the evening with purpose and power, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary and K-8 Schools, David Zaid, took the stage. In the closing message reminiscent of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he moved the room with a message of resilience, hope and the limitless potential within us all.
“Dream. Be resilient. Know that you can accomplish anything to which you set your mind.”
His words echoed through the room, leaving an indelible mark on every heart.
A Lasting Contribution was more than just an event–it was a testament to the unwavering spirit of Long Beach Unified. It was a celebration of excellence, a tribute to service, and a reminder that education is the greatest gift we can give. To all who were honored, thank you for your contributions, your sacrifices and your dreams. You inspire us all.
