On December 6, 2024, the Long Beach School for Adults opened its doors to the community to celebrate the transformative power of education. In a stirring open house ceremony attended by Deputy Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Brown and district leadership, students and educators alike shared stories that brought tears, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of pride to all in attendance. The heart of the evening wasn’t just the achievements of the students — it was the unwavering belief that it’s never too late to transform your life through learning.
Two remarkable students, Emily Sanchez and Lita Koev, stepped forward to share their journeys, their voices trembling with emotion. Each had faced unimaginable challenges, from balancing work and family to overcoming self-doubt that had lingered since dropping out years ago. Yet, standing tall before the crowd, they spoke of the school’s impact with gratitude that silenced the room. They credited their success to the tireless dedication of their teachers, particularly ABE Lead Teacher Ms. Theresa Kinder, whose relentless encouragement reminded them of their potential when they had all but given up hope. “Ms. Kinder didn’t just teach me how to read and comprehend,” Sanchez shared, voice breaking. “She taught me that I could still dream.”
Principal Nicole Lopez, the master of ceremonies, painted a vivid picture of the work being done on campus every day. With stories of students finding courage to return to the classroom after decades, or parents earning diplomas to inspire their children, she reminded everyone that this school is more than an academic institution — it’s a lifeline. “We are not just handing out diplomas here,” Lopez passionately said. “We’re offering second chances, and those chances ripple across families, across generations.”
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Brown echoed those sentiments, expressing deep admiration for the resilience of the students and dedication of the staff. “This school isn’t just about academics,” Dr. Brown explains. “It’s about healing, hope, and the belief that every single one of us deserves the opportunity to rewrite our story.” Dr. Brown commended the school’s commitment to removing barriers to education and creating a supportive environment where students of all ages can thrive.
The event concluded with applause that seemed to echo far beyond the campus walls. As attendees mingled and shared their own stories of resilience, one message became abundantly clear: Long Beach School for Adults is more than a school — it’s a testament to the transformative power of community, perseverance and the belief that it’s never too late to achieve greatness. The open house wasn’t just a celebration of diplomas, it was a celebration of life itself, rekindled through education.
