5th Annual Toy Hackathon at Sato

5th Annual Toy Hackathon at Sato

Several LBUSD students, staff, families and community members gathered at Sato Academy for the district's 5th Annual Toy Hackathon, a yearly heartwarming tradition in which volunteers “hack” toys to make them accessible to students with disabilities.

The event invited the local community to help make a difference for the holiday season by creating accessible toys for Long Beach Unified's healthcare students. LBUSD’s Specialized Healthcare SDC program is designed for students with motor, speech/language and cognitive disabilities.

Garnering over 100 toys in the previous year, the Toy Hackathon continues to offer students and the community a chance to collaborate while benefiting younger students. Volunteers were taught to solder, install buttons, cut wires and modify toys to activate new play functions. The newly refurbished toys were then distributed to specialized healthcare classrooms throughout the district before Winter Break.
