Tentative Agreement Reached Between LBUSD and TALB

Tentative Agreement Reached Between LBUSD and TALB

Bargaining teams for the Long Beach Unified School District and the Teachers Association of Long Beach met today and reached a tentative agreement. This agreement includes a substantive package of ongoing, retroactive and one-time salary increases, dating back to the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, and the addition of two pupil-free days starting in the 2024-25 school year while keeping current benefit plans.

What will the new agreement include?

Pending final approval by TALB members and the Board of Education, key tenets of the agreement include:

  • 9% ongoing salary increase retroactive to July 1, 2022
  • 3% one-time payment based on earnings for the 2022-23 fiscal year
  • Addition of two paid pupil-free days to the 2024-25 school calendar
  • Increasing the rate of pay for professional development to the teachers’ regular hourly rate
  • Renewal of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) addressing key components for Full Day Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten, and Collaborative Co-Teach programs
  • New MOUs for Temporary Transfer Process Changes and Outdoor Education program
  • Additional stipend opportunities added to Salary Schedule S

When can qualifying employees expect to receive raises and/or retro checks?

(Pending approval by TALB and the Board of Education)

  • May to June – 9% retroactive checks for 2022-23 (covering July 2022 to May 2023)
  • May to June – regular paychecks will include ongoing raises
  • September – off-schedule check, which is 3% of an employee’s earnings from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023

Examples of how a 9% on-schedule raise would benefit TALB members (based on salary):

Examples of how a one-time 3% off-schedule payment would benefit TALB members, based on salary (this is in addition to the retro checks for the ongoing salary increase):

TALB members who make the average annual teacher salary in LBUSD, which is $95,000, would earn approximately $521 of pay per each additional pupil-free day. This additional pay is independent of any other compensation offer.

What are the next steps?

The next step in the process is for TALB’s Executive Board to approve the contract and establish dates for the ratification vote by the membership. Following the ratification vote, the agreement will be presented to the LBUSD Board of Education for final approval. Please look for additional information regarding the ratification process in a subsequent update.
