School Board OKs Raises for Teachers, Non-Represented Employees

The Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education unanimously approved contract agreements with the Teachers Association of Long Beach this week for 2019-20 and 2020-21, providing ongoing, one-time and retroactive salary increases. The board also approved the same salary increases for non-represented employees, including managers.

The board’s approval comes after TALB members in the K-12 unit recently approved the agreements with a yes vote of more than 81 percent, while Child Development/Head Start unit members approved by more than 93 percent.

Qualifying employees will receive an ongoing salary increase of 1% for 2019-20, and an ongoing 2% increase for 2020-21. The 2019-20 raise is retroactive to July 1, 2019. The 2020-21 raise is retroactive to July 1, 2020. In addition, these employees will receive a one-time “off schedule” increase of 2% for 2020-21, retroactive to July 1, 2020. Following is the schedule of when the affected employees will receive the pay increases:

  • June – retroactive checks (for the ongoing 1% and 2% pay increases)
  • July 1 – ongoing raises reflected on regular paychecks as the new fiscal year begins
  • September – off-schedule check, which is 2% of an employee's annual salary from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021

The Board of Education and TALB also approved memoranda of understanding in the areas of collaborative co-teaching, training and professional development, and support for teachers who are changing assignments. The contract agreements and memoranda documents are available here.
