Early Admittance to Transitional Kindergarten

Children born between April 3-June 15, 2019, may have the opportunity to attend TK beginning in mid-October of 2023. Early admit students will be placed by the Early Learning and Elementary Schools Office once TK enrollment is stabilized across the district. For the 2022-2023 school year, this happened in October. School sites will not place or maintain lists for early admission to TK.

Please complete this Early Learning Opportunities Google Form to indicate your interest in attending TK through the early admission process.

Placement may not be at the school of residence; typically, several options are given to families, who may choose the best site for their needs. Placement priority will be given to April birthdays first, then May and June.

We appreciate your interest in attending TK and your patience as we ensure that all age-eligible TK students are enrolled.

Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an exciting educational opportunity for young learners. TK is the first year of a two-year program that provides children with birthdays between September 2 and April 2, a developmentally-appropriate full-day learning experience taught by credentialed teachers and paraprofessionals.

Classrooms maintain a 1:12 adult-to-student ratio during the 6-hour day. All elementary and K-8 schools (*except Chavez and Hudson) have transitional kindergarten classrooms. Parents can choose to enroll their student in Transitional Kindergarten or wait the additional year when they are age-eligible to enroll in kindergarten.

Transitional Kindergarten enrollment begins online and at the school of residence on February 1. School of Choice for TK begins March 1.

For more information about Transitional Kindergarten, please use the helpful links on this webpage or call the Office of the Assistant Superintendent of Early Learning & Elementary Schools at (562) 997-8247.

*Chavez TK students will attend Edison for their TK year. Hudson TK students will attend Muir for their TK year. These students will be automatically rolled back to Chavez or Hudson for kindergarten.
