Local School Wellness Policy

"Long Beach Unified School District recognizes the link between student health and learning and desires to build a culture of health and well-being to support all students so that they are healthy, safe, engaged, heard, supported, and challenged. To support educational equity and maximize the opportunity for instruction, the Board desires to provide a comprehensive program promoting healthy eating and physical activity physical, social-emotional, and cognitive well-being for district students.
We work to coordinate and align district efforts to support student wellness through health education, physical education and activity, health services, nutrition services, psychological and counseling services, and a safe and healthy school environment. In addition, we collaborate with other offices to develop strategies for promoting staff wellness and for involving parents/guardians and the community in reinforcing students' understanding and appreciation of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”

LBUSD School Wellness Council

The council meets quarterly and participates in the development, implementation, and periodic review and update of the district's student wellness policy and advises the district on health-related issues, activities, policies, and programs.

Local School Wellness Policy (LSWP) & LSWP Triennial Assessment

A local school wellness policy (“wellness policy”, “LSWP”) guides a school district’s efforts to establish a school environment that promotes students’ health, well-being, and ability to learn. In LBUSD, our wellness policy is Board Policy 5030 (link). According to the United States Department of Agriculture Final Rule (link), school districts must conduct a comprehensive wellness policy assessment once every three years. The Triennial Assessment requires school districts to assess compliance with their LSWP and to make this assessment available to the public. School Districts are required to set goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based wellness activities.

The Triennial Assessment is comprised of four components:

  1. Comparison to a model LSWP
  2. Extent of compliance for all schools with the District LSWP
  3. Progress made in attaining the goals of the wellness policy
  4. Triennial Assessment report to the public

Long Beach Unified School District conducted the first Trienneal Assessment in the Spring of 2022 (link).

Our second Trienneal Assessment was completed in the Spring of 2025 (LBUSD 2025 Triennial Assessment Report to Public)
