Program Services & Models

Long Beach Unified School District offers Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Services for eligible students starting in 3rd grade. The GATE/EXCEL program is designed to meet the unique needs of gifted and talented students, and to maximize their academic and social development. Classroom instruction begins with the grade level core curriculum and is differentiated by the teacher based upon student need and ability ensuring positive motivation and the intellectual growth of gifted students. Differentiation of the core curriculum occurs through various means, such as, flexible groupings, acceleration of content, independent study, tiered assignments, learning centers, compacting in student’s area of strength, thinking prompts, inquiry, honors and advanced placement courses, and use of above-grade-level resources. Teachers across the district are provided with opportunities to attend staff development in GATE approaches and strategies.

All school sites have the option to provide clustering opportunities for their high achieving students.  The selected program model may differ from year to year and grade to grade based on the number of identified students or classrooms available per grade level.  Please contact the school site directly for more information about programs and services offered. 

 

Schools with GATE/EXCEL programs should have:

• GATE/EXCEL Coordinator

• Teachers currently attending GATE/EXCEL training

• GATE/EXCEL site team for teacher collaboration
