LBUSD Teachers, Students Earn Honors

DeMille Middle School nurse Jayne Petrich was named Long Beach Unified School District School Nurse of the Year. Chris Eckert, teacher at Tincher, received the Elementary Digital Voice Teacher of the Year award for technology integration and teacher support. The annual award is open to all teachers through Los Angeles County via CTAP 11 Region. Marilyn Anania, teacher at Millikan, has been selected to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute in Rome this summer. Participants will be learning to incorporate lessons on Italian art into lessons of Italian. Anania has plans to offer a fourth year of Italian and AP Italian at Millikan in the future. Robin Sroka, career center supervisor at Wilson, won the 2006-07 Arthur Marmaduke High School Counselor Award, presented by the California Student Aid Commission and EDFUND, its student loan auxiliary. Millikan High School student Bashir Hassan placed first in the recent Port of Long Beach High School Speech contest. He was a featured speaker at the World Trade Week luncheon in May. Melissa Cordon, student at Birney, is the statewide winner of the Tar Wars anti-smoking poster contest sponsored by the California Academy of Family Physicians. Winners of the recent LBUSD Spelling Bee are Coral Kazaroff, Naples, first place; Michelica Balajadia, Hudson, second place; and Dayana Davila, Gant, third place.
