Poly Expands Outdoor Sensory Space

The outdoor sensory space for special education students at Poly High School is continuing to expand thanks to community support and approval from the Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education.

Students and staff have started on the first phases of building a barefoot outdoor sensory pathway along a new “The Tree of Life” mural designed by local artist Enrique Brito. Once completed, the pathway will provide additional health benefits for special education students.

The ongoing project, led by special education teacher Indira Jimenez, continues to be a schoolwide effort as many Jackrabbits have come together to make the space a reality. Students and staff plan to volunteer their time during lunch, as well as before and after school, to help complete the pathway.

Poly’s outdoor sensory space opened in 2021 as a safe haven for special education students. The specially designed area combines a range of stimulating items to help students develop and engage their senses.
