Longfellow Elementary School honored active military service personnel and veterans during its first annual schoolwide event just before the recent Veterans Day holiday.
Several veterans were honored at the event which included a flag-raising ceremony. Principal Sam Platis presented plaques of appreciation to the veterans on the school’s playground as students cheered and waved American flags.
U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Nick Karthas of Lakewood was this year’s Guest of High Honor. Karthas served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He earned the WWII Victory Medal, European-African WWII Medal with three bronze stars, Asiatic Pacific WWII Medal, Korean War Medal, Vietnam Medal and Good Conduct Medal. The 98-year-old veteran first enlisted at 17 years old.
