Sen. Gonzalez Inspires Lakewood Students to Amplify Their Voices

California State Sen. Lena A. Gonzalez met with approximately 80 girls from Lakewood High School’s Student Success Initiative (SSI) to discuss her journey to Sacramento as a Latina and the importance of inspiring the next generation of women of color to speak out on important social issues.

The students in attendance also participated in a Q&A session with Senator Gonzalez focused on the importance of self-worth, perseverance and the need for young women to raise their voices in their communities.

“Environmental justice means racial justice. It means gender justice. It affects our communities of color greatly,” shared Sen. Gonzalez.

SSI is part of the Long Beach Unified School District's Learning Acceleration and Support Plan. The districtwide initiative provides targeted, multi-tiered support, intervention and acceleration for students of color to support their academic, social and emotional needs.

The initiative’s mission is to develop students who: engage in successful scholarly practices, build meaningful relationships, build cultural awareness and complete A-G requirements to ensure access to post-secondary options. Participating SSI students also develop as leaders within their school and community while exhibiting self-actualization, emotional intelligence, cultural competency and meaningful contributions as global citizens.

Senator Gonzalez represents the 33rd District which includes nearly 1 million residents in Long Beach, Southeast Los Angeles, Signal Hill and portions of South Los Angeles and Lakewood. She was first elected to the state Senate in 2019 and was re-elected in 2020 for her first full 4-year term.
