Janice Filer, retired LBUSD principal, will receive the President’s Award for Youth Empowerment from the Long Beach Branch NAACP during the association’s upcoming President’s Reception on Sept. 24 in Long Beach.

Martha Alba-Gonzalez, teacher on special assignment, who was previously at Chavez Elementary School, was one of 23 local educators to earn a monetary award for their schools from the “Champions Educate Here” program funded through the College Football Playoff Foundation, the Los Angeles College Football Playoff National Championship Host Committee and the LA84 Foundation. The award celebrates educators who nurture students' academic, mental health and socio-emotional needs through sport, play and movement. The winning educators will receive up to $20,000 for their efforts at their respective schools. The funds will support the further development of the Ballet Folklorico program at Chavez.
