Names in the News

Several Long Beach Unified School District staff, including a former Board of Education member, were recognized by the local community during the recent summer months.

Poly teacher Leslie Saito was named Outstanding Woman in Education by the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Saito was one of four local women celebrated for their vision, courage, compassion, proven success, generosity and involvement in the Long Beach community, as demonstrated by how they help other women succeed.

LBUSD Physical Education curriculum leader Lisa Ulmer received the Frank Vessels, Jr. Award from the Long Beach Century Club. The award is presented for long-term support of athletics within the District.

Bixby Elementary School’s Jill Nickell was named Teacher of the Year by the Long Beach Council PTA. The organization also recognized Lester (Dow) Lawson IV of Stanford Middle School with the Outstanding Administrator honor. 

The LBUSD Office of School Support Services presented peer-nominated awards to District staff during its inaugural symposium in June. Those recognized include Sarah Madrid, Psychologist of the Year; John Wong, Counselor of the Year; and Miguel Zuniga, Social Worker of the Year.

Retired Board of Education member Felton Williams was one of nine men to receive the 2022 Influential Men and Fathers of the Year recognition from the Long Beach Branch NAACP.
