Sophomore Yerin Go of California Academy of Mathematics and Science recently won an Honorable Mention Award in the West Basin Municipal District’s 2022 Water is Life Student Art Contest. Go earned one of four awards in the high school category and will receive an Apple iPad as the prize. The District received 850 submissions this year. The annual contest encourages third through 12th grade students to showcase their artistic creativity through the depiction of responsible water use in their homes, schools and communities.

Twenty-one high school students will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Association of Long Beach Educational Managers and Confidential Employees (ALBEM) at an award ceremony at McBride High School on June 9. The 2022 ALBEM scholarship recipients include Virginia Soto Hernandez of Avalon; Kelly Melvin of Browning; Lady Baluyot and Marilu Quintero of Cabrillo; Belle Li of CAMS; Stephanie Martinez Sanchez of EPHS; Yamilene Vaal and Melissa Lima-Preciado of Jordan; Jordan Parker and Isrra Shhub of Lakewood; Kimora Hicks of McBride; Andrew Aguirre and Lauren Franco of Millikan; Rachel Perry and Hebah Halibi of Poly; Jennifer Castillon of Reid; Adeline Ell of Renaissance; Sydney Roberts of Sato; and Parissa Lor-Tim and Jose Rivera of Wilson. An annual scholarship designated for the child of an ALBEM member went to Maya Alvarez.
