Hello, Long Beach Unified Community.
After more than a year of distance learning, it has been so refreshing to see many of our elementary students transition to learning in their classrooms. Even with their masks on, I can see students’ smiles through their eyes. I love watching the interaction among students and their teachers – a constant reminder of how much teachers matter in the lives of our students.
During last week’s spring break, a number of our student athletes played their games or participated in sporting events. I even overheard a parent say that, “there’s nothing like football in April.” While the sports seasons feel very different than in any other year, I am glad that there is a season at all this year.
It has been a busy week in Long Beach Unified. We were excited to welcome back all of our secondary, or middle and high school, teachers to their classrooms to prepare for many of their students to return to campus on the phasing-in schedule that has been shared over the last few weeks. Our middle and high schools will follow all of the same health and safety protocols that are being used across the district, and each school will continue to provide specific details to their school community. While many students will return to campus over the next two weeks, we know that others have chosen to remain in distance learning for the remainder of this year, and our staff is mindful and responsive to this reality. We encourage you to reach out to your students’ teachers or school administrators as we make this transition together. Transitions and change, even when they are not sudden, can cause stress for those involved, and we want to be supportive of all our students through this time.
As we work to reopen every campus in LBUSD, we also have staff preparing for summer learning and for next year’s instructional programs. This summer there will be opportunities for all students to engage in learning, enrichment and support in a way that has never been seen before. And, based on the needs of our students, there will continue to be an intense focus on students’ social emotional well-being, alongside support for academic learning. There will be more information to come in the months ahead. And, as I shared in a previous message, we are planning for a full day of instruction for next year, along with an online academy for those students who choose that option.
As I continue to reflect on the past and hold hope for the future, I find myself in awe of what our team has achieved over the past year through a global pandemic that has rocked our entire world. And, even with all that has been done, we see clearly, through our data, that the pandemic has exacerbated inequities among our students and laid bare the work that needs to be done to recover from the past year. What I know for sure is that our LBUSD staff, along with our community, will continue to place students at the center of our work to build excellence and equity into all that we do.

Los Maestros de Secundaria Regresan, La Reapertura Continua

Después de más de un año de aprendizaje a distancia, ha sido refrescante ver a muchos de nuestros alumnos de primaria hacer la transición al aprendizaje en sus aulas. Aun con sus cubre bocas puestos, puedo ver las sonrisas de los estudiantes en sus ojos. Me encanta ver la participación entre los alumnos y sus maestros – un recordatorio constante de cuanto importan los maestros en las vidas de nuestros estudiantes.
Durante las vacaciones de primavera la semana pasada, un gran número de nuestros atletas estudiantes jugaron sus partidos o participaron en eventos deportivos. Hasta escuche a un padre de familia decir, “no hay nada como el football en abril.” Aunque la temporada deportiva se siente muy diferente a las de cualquier otro año, me alegro de que haya una temporada este año.
Ha sido una semana muy ocupada en el Distrito Unificado de Long Beach. Estábamos emocionados al dar la bienvenida a todos nuestros maestros de secundaria y preparatoria, a sus salones de clases para prepararse, ya que muchos de sus estudiantes regresan al plantel educativo en el horario de incorporación gradual que se ha compartido durante las últimas semanas. Nuestras escuelas secundarias y preparatorias seguirán los mismos protocolos de salud y seguridad que se utilizan en todo el distrito, y cada escuela continuara brindado detalle específico a su comunidad escolar. Si bien, muchos estudiantes regresan al plantel durante las próximas dos semanas, sabemos que otros han optado por permanecer en el aprendizaje a distancia por lo que resta del año y nuestro personal está consciente y responde a esta realidad. Alentamos a que se comunique con los maestros o administradores escolares de sus estudiantes mientras hacemos esta transición juntos. Las transiciones y cambios, incluso cuando no son repentinos, pueden causar estrés a los involucrados y queremos apoyar a todos nuestros estudiantes durante estos tiempos.
Mientras trabajamos para reabrir cada plantel en LBUSD, también tenemos personal que se prepara para el aprendizaje de verano y para los programas instructivos del próximo año. Este verano habrá oportunidades para que todos los estudiantes participen en el aprendizaje, enriquecimiento y apoyo de una manera que nunca antes se había visto. Y basados de las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes, seguirá habiendo un enfoque intenso en el bienestar socioemocional de los estudiantes, junto con apoyo para el aprendizaje académico. Tendremos más información en los próximos meses. Como compartí en un menaje anterior, estamos planeando un día completo de instrucción para el próximo año, junto con una academia en línea para aquellos estudiantes que elijan esa opción.
Mientras sigo reflexionando sobre el pasado y manteniendo la esperanza para el futuro, me asombra lo que nuestro equipo ha logrado durante el año pasado a través de una pandemia global que ha sacudido a todo el mundo. Incluso con todo lo que se ha hecho, vemos claramente, a través de nuestros datos, que la pandemia ha exacerbado las desigualdades entre nuestros estudiantes y ha dejado al descubierto el trabajo que debe hacerse para recuperarse del año pasado. Lo que sé con certeza es que nuestro personal de LBUSD, junto con nuestra comunidad, continuara colocando a los estudiantes en el centro de nuestro trabajo para construir excelencia y equidad en todo lo que hacemos.
