Clinical Practices I, II, III Overview:

“Clinical practice is designed in such a way that candidates learn from experienced educators, are evaluated against the TPEs, and have the support and guidance they need to become effective educators… Clinical practice is a developmental and sequential set of activities integrated with theoretical and pedagogical coursework, and must consist of a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice across the arc of the program.” -CCTC

  • Clinical I: Early Fieldwork

    • Prior to credential program acceptance

    • Mainly in schools and classrooms: observations, one-on-one tutoring and support, working with small groups

  • Clinical II: Pre-Student Teaching

    • Credential program acceptance

    • Specific fieldwork completed at school sites directly tied to faculty/curriculum expectations: one-on-one assessments and instruction, small group instruction, whole class instruction

    • Under the direction of a district-employed supervisor

    • 10-45 hours per semester based on course(s) enrolled

  • Clinical III: Student Teaching

    • Full semester working with district-employed Cooperating/Master Teacher(s)

    • Supported and evaluated by University Supervisor: Development of their Individual Development Plans


Clinical Practices I, II, III Placement Process:

  • All universities who are interested in establishing a partnership with LBUSD must establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that clearly defines and outlines the agreed upon requirements and parameters of the fieldwork experience(s).  

  • All universities who already have an MOU established with LBUSD, are required to follow the district’s protocol of the centralization of fieldwork placements.  Contact  Ryan Ung, LBUSD Clinical Practices Coordinator, at to discuss the process of assigning both student observers and/or student teachers with LBUSD.  Students and university staff are not allowed to coordinate their own placements.


Master Teacher Requirements

The following are the minimum qualifications for being a Master Teachers

  • Hold a Clear Credential in the same subject area as the Student Teacher

  • Permanent contract and have a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience

  • Have a strong interest in mentoring Student Teachers

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively mentor novice teachers and willingness to provide a structured learning environment that allows for the gradual release of respon
