The May Wilson Media Center bulletin is now online!

Download the Wilson Media Center May bulletin to help our Media Center fulfill its mission to the Wilson community by donating some of the much needed items listed there.

Here are a select few highlights of what our Media Center does for the Wilson community and why your help is absolutely necessary at this time when no funds are being directed to support our libraries and Media Centers:

• The Wilson Library is open full time and services 4300 students, a staff of over 200, and the local community.
• Our collection has approximately 24,000 items
• Over 305 scheduled classes have come in for lessons, research, and computer usage. That's not counting drop-in classes and students, unscheduled blocks, and the average crowd of 75-150 kids who come in at lunch to study.

• Of those classes, Miss Ladas, our wonderful librarian has taught approximately 102 lessons (includes Library Orientation, research skills, works cited, MLA format, databases, plagiarism).
• Over 354 classes have scheduled computer time in the 903 Lab.
• We collaborate and support all teachers and departments on campus.
• My Vote Student Mock Elections were held in the library for the first time and 900 students participated in electing a president and voting on propositions. .
• Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea and Nobel Prize Nominee, visited our school and spoke to 1,400 LBUSD and neighboring area students as part of Long Beach Reads One Book week.
LBUSD students collected $3,000 for Greg Mortenson's Pennies for Peace fundraiser.
• Other guest speakers included: Humane Educator Deborah Turner and her special needs dog, Wheely Willy who spoke to special ed classes and Alan Sitomar, author of Homeboyz presented to Devon Day's English students.
• The library hosted 14 days of testing (not including upcoming STAR and APs); 10 luncheons/socials; most conference period, PTA, and Site Based Decision Meetings; numerous IEPS • various other meetings by psychologists, counselors, ancillary groups, departments, athletics, etc. Also 2 weeks of textbook check-out , check-in and summer storage of most books on campus!
• Our library also hosts Open Mic Poetry Nights that in the past, have drawn hundreds of students who express their feelings and thoughts in a safe, respected atmosphere.
• The Wilson Library received a Target Field Trip Grant. Two Park Avenue and one special ed class were taken to UCLA for a campus tour and lunch.
• We also received a Picturing America Grant and now have laminated copies of fine art available for teacher checkout.
• Patio Renovation continues under the guidance of our Wilson parent and volunteer landscape architect CJ Crockett of House to Home Landscape.
• Hosted first ever Scholastic Book Fair and Barnes and Noble Book Fair. Fundraisers resulted in $600. This was the only funding available for the purchase of new books!
• The Wilson Library continues to collaborate with LBPL, CSULB and UCLA libraries.

The 5th Annual AP Report to the Nation

This week we got word from College Board that our school is one of 16 schools across the nation that will be recognized in the 5th Annual AP Report to the Nation for increasing access to AP among traditionally under served students. Specifically, our school is being recognized as the public school with the largest number of Latino students in the class of 2008 achieving success (with a score of 3 or higher) on the AP World History exam. (2006 exam).

The section of the report where Wilson Classical High School is mentioned can be accessed from this link.

The College Board will be notifying newspapers and TV stations in our local area about our achievements. We were interviewed by LA Times on February 3rd late in the afternoon.

This is a fabulous tribute to all of Wilson's teachers, staff and students, and our entire community.

Way to go Bruins!!
