Introduction to Computers

1st Trimester

Instructor: Mr. Gee rgee@lbusd.k12.ca.us



Each assignment will receive a grade of A, B, C, D, or F.  Mr. Gee will assign each grade points.  For instance, A= 4 pts., B= 3 pts., C= 2 pts., D= 1 pt., and F= 0 pts.  The final grade for this class will be based on the average points of the following assignments.  Assignments may be redone before the end of the trimester for a higher grade.

Skill: Keyboarding

Instructions: Demonstrate keyboarding proficiency by taking a three paragraph timed test (Skill Check).  There will be nine lessons that need to be completed by the end of the trimester.  At the end of each lesson is a Skill Check.  At the end of a week, Mr. Gee will record the performance for a particular Skill Check for a grade.  You can re-do each Skill Check for a higher grade before grades are turned in at the end of the trimester.
Skill Check 1 is due on September 14, Skill Check 2 is due on September 21, Skill Check 3 is due on September 28, Skill Check 4 is due on October 5, Skill Check 5 is due on October 12, Skill Check 6 is due on October 19, Skill Check 7 is due on October 26, and Skill Check 8 is due on November 2.

Situation:  Christina lends her "Hannah Montana 2" CD to Mr. Gee.  Mr. Gee takes the CD home and downloads all of the songs from the CD onto the hard drive of his iMac at home.  Mrs. Gee then downloads the songs from their iMac onto her iPod Nano and plays them in her van so that the Gee kids can sing along with Hannah Montana.

Task:  In your own words, write an five- paragraph essay (introduction, 3-paragraph body, and conclusion) that addresses the following questions:

  1. What is copyright and what is its purpose?
  2. What is copyright infringement?
  3. What does “Fair Use”mean?
  4. What does the “First Sale Doctrine”mean?
  5. Has Christina violated any copyright laws?  Why or why not?
  6. Has Mr. Gee violated any copyright laws?  Why or why not?

Your essay should be in your own words and free from spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors.  Plagiarism, the use of another person’s words without the person’s permission, WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!  Those who choose to use others' words will have their essays returned to them for revisions.
